Modular Monolith over Premature Microservices

Kept one deployable with strict domain boundaries instead of distributing early — extracting a service only when scale or team boundaries demanded it.

Context: a growing product with one team. Decision: a modular monolith — clear module interfaces, no cross-module table access — rather than microservices up front. Trade-off: gave up independent scaling of parts for far simpler deployment, debugging and transactions, while keeping the option to extract a hotspot into a service later without a rewrite.

What it does

  • Domain-bounded modules with explicit interfaces; no reaching into another module’s tables.
  • Extract-to-service path kept open for genuine hotspots.
  • One pipeline, one place to debug — faster delivery for a small team.
